One of the most relevant elements that we have to check from time to time is the sprockets and chain of our bike. How can we then ensure that we take good care of this elements so that we can extend its life? We tell you this next!

One of the most recommended steps in this case is always to check the sprockets and chain every 5,000 km or so. Depending on the use we give to our bike, the period of revision will vary. For example, if we use our bike for training and competitions, the revision should be more often than if we use the bike only to move around town.

We will also have to increase the revision period if, for instance, we usually ride in areas with many slopes or high humidity.

During this service, we must make sure that:

  1. If the chain is well greased
  2. If the chain is correctly tensioned
  3. If the teeth of the plate and the sprocket are correct and not worn

How do you grease the chain on your motorcycle properly?

For the correct functioning of the chain, as well as to extend the life of the sprockets, it is advisable to clean and re-grease it from time to time. We recommend that you follow the steps below:

  1. If possible, we recommend using a stand to slightly raise the motorcycle for better access, thus improving cleaning. If we can place it in a high place, within our reach, even better.
  2. With the engine off (important), we will slowly turn the rear wheel, applying a special cleaning fluid for motorcycle chains.
  3. Then, we can pass a paper over the chain, while we turn the rear wheel to ensure a better cleaning.
  4. Once the chain has been properly cleaned, it will be greased. There are several specific products for this purpose. We will now carry out the same process, that is, we will turn the wheel little by little, while with the other hand we will apply the spray on the chain. It is also advisable to grease the area of the back plate for proper operation.

Please note that in some cases, especially when using dirt bikes where the chain is easily soiled by dirt and so on, it may be advisable to remove the chain directly for better cleaning. At the same time, we recommend that you take a look at the chainring and sprocket and check that the teeth are in perfect condition.

As I imagine you are deducing after reading this little tutorial, it is essential to have a clean and well-oiled chain to increase the life of your bike's transmission, reducing wear and tear and improving its life by up to 15,000km.

How do I know how much chain tension my motorcycle should have?

In this regard, we recommend looking directly at the manufacturer's instructions, as they will specify the exact tension that our chain should have.

For safety reasons, it is recommended that it is a little loose and not the other way around. In any case, you should check the markings on the swingarm and make sure they are the same on both sides.

Likewise, if you are not sure how it should look, we recommend that you consult a professional, since this is a delicate matter that can affect not only mechanically but also your safety.

Changing the transmission kit

Another really important factor is to change the sprockets and chain at once, i.e. to change the chainring and the sprocket at the same time as the chain. This is advisable to do it every 20.000km approximately, always depending of course on the use of the bike. In this way we will ensure less wear and tear and notice how much smoother our bike goes. Remember that on our website you can buy the sprockets, crowns and chains you need. Contact us if you do not find the model you are looking for.

Last but not least, you must of course make sure that you acquire high quality sprockets. At MJ Corse, we make sure that we always offer you the best at the best price and we work very hard to make sure that this is the case.

We hope these tips have been useful to you.
